Ch. Mouton Rothschild has since 1945 commissioned an artist for each vintage's label. Roufino Tamayo agreed in 1990 to create an original work for the label but died in 1991. His family, wishing to see his intention fulfilled, provided El Brindis, a man proposing a toast, for the 1998 vintage.

The chateau made a stir in 1973 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild succeeded in getting it reclassified as a first growth, the first change to the classification since 1855.
